A Norwegian court has confirmed that the custody hearing for former doctor Arne Bye will be decided through written procedure. This means the scheduled detention meeting has been canceled, according to police officials.
Police revealed last week they have filed new charges against the former Frosta physician. He now faces accusations of 33 additional rape incidents involving 16 different victims. Investigators have been examining these cases since December.
Bye remains in custody while police seek to extend his detention until his appeal case begins on November 26. The court had originally scheduled a detention hearing for Monday.
The Trøndelag District Court previously sentenced Bye to 21 years in prison. He was convicted for raping 70 patients and 82 instances of abusing his position as a doctor. Bye has appealed all aspects of this verdict.
This case highlights serious failures in medical oversight systems. The sheer number of victims suggests systemic problems in monitoring healthcare professionals.
