An Eastern Uusimaa police officer lost his job after accepting bribes. The longtime officer received a conviction in September for taking illegal payments.
The man worked as a field supervisor and had received awards for his service. Police authorities dismissed him immediately after his conviction.
A court sentenced the 59-year-old to 60 days of conditional imprisonment. Judges found he accepted money in exchange for sharing confidential information.
A woman transferred 3,000 euros to the officer's account using MobilePay between 2022 and 2023. MobilePay is Finland's popular mobile payment application similar to Venmo.
In return, the officer provided the woman with details about her adult son's criminal cases. The police officer claimed he had legitimate work-related reasons for sharing the information. The court rejected his explanation.
Prosecutors also charged the officer with abuse of official position, but those charges were dismissed. The 41-year-old woman received 80 day-fines for giving the bribe. She must pay 480 euros.
The Eastern Uusimaa Police Department stated bribe-taking showed completely inappropriate unreliability. Officials said the officer crossed an irreversible boundary that cannot be accepted.
His actions endangered public trust in police duties and lost confidence from both his employer and colleagues. The case reveals how even decorated officers can compromise their positions when personal gain overrides professional ethics.
