BankID services are working again for most customers following Wednesday evening's technical disruption. The authentication system experienced partial unavailability starting just before 5 PM local time.
Service provider representatives confirmed they were troubleshooting the issue throughout the evening. By 6 PM, most users could access BankID services again.
Company spokesperson Hege Steinsland offered apologies for the inconvenience. She told media that teams were working at full capacity to resolve the problems.
What caused the BankID service disruption? Technical issues made both BankID and ID-sjekk partially unavailable during peak evening hours. Customers who couldn't use the app could still authenticate transactions using physical code devices.
The service provider's website advised users to try again if their first authentication attempt failed. Meanwhile, Vipps payment service also reported separate login problems Wednesday evening.
Vipps users could still send payments but couldn't use the "Log in with Vipps" feature on external websites. Officials haven't confirmed whether the two service disruptions were related.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of Norway's digital infrastructure when key authentication systems fail. Millions rely on BankID for everything from banking to government services, making such outages particularly disruptive to daily life.
