Bergen Finance Commissioner Steps Down, Successor Named

Bergen's finance commissioner Jacob Mæhle has resigned to prioritize his family. He will move back to Oslo with his wife and their four-month-old daughter.

Former consultant Eirik B. Tenfjord was appointed as the new finance commissioner today. He takes over during challenging economic times for Norway's second-largest city.

Tenfjord previously worked as an advisor to several Conservative Party commissioners in Bergen. This includes current council leader Christine Meyer during her time as health commissioner.

"I hope we last longer than a week this time," Tenfjord joked to Meyer during the announcement. Their previous collaboration lasted only one week before Meyer moved to another position.

The economics graduate acknowledged the difficulties ahead. "Yes, you have to tolerate some public criticism, but that's politics. At the same time, it's a major professional challenge that attracts me to the job," he said.

Mæhle served approximately eighteen months in the position. He helped prepare two budgets focused on cuts and efficiency measures. The most recent budget faced criticism for what opponents called "unsocial" reductions.

Council leader Meyer expressed respect for Mæhle's decision. "I've tried to get Jacob to stay as long as possible, but I respect that he now prioritizes his wife and daughter," she stated.

Mæhle described his tenure as educational, fun, motivating, and difficult. He expressed confidence in his successor's ability to handle the demanding role.

This marks the third finance commissioner change since the current administration took office in autumn 2023. The frequent turnover highlights the challenges facing Bergen's municipal finances.

Political observers note the timing creates uncertainty as the city works to stabilize its economy. The new commissioner must continue implementing difficult financial measures while building consensus.

Mæhle and his family will relocate to Oslo where his wife returns to work. He will take parental leave while considering future career options.
