Finnish construction materials firm Betolar reported mixed third-quarter results. The company reduced its workforce from 44 to 34 employees while continuing to develop its low-carbon concrete technology.
Revenue fell to €218,000 from €276,000 during the same period last year. The operating loss improved slightly to -€969,000 from -€974,000. Operating result measures business performance before depreciation and financing items.
New orders showed positive momentum, growing from €237,000 to €314,000. For the full year through September, Betolar generated €635,000 in revenue, exceeding last year's comparable period of €551,000.
The company maintained its full-year guidance, expecting higher revenue than in 2023. Betolar recently secured a major €1.4 million infrastructure project from two Finnish companies. This order value nearly doubles the company's entire 2023 revenue.
CEO Tuija Kalpala said the company focused on commercializing its metal extraction method in Europe and Asia during the quarter. In Finland, Betolar continued designing industrial-scale proof of concept for its metal extraction technology.
The construction business unit concentrated on growing infrastructure construction that demands sustainable solutions. Kalpala stated the construction operations create foundation for future customer relationships and markets for the company's own binding agent production.
Betolar also announced market entry into Australia's mining sector. The company is developing a low-carbon backfill solution for Mandalay Resources and accelerating low-carbon sprayed concrete adoption with Jetcrete in Australia.
The late-October infrastructure order won't appear in third-quarter figures but signals potential growth. Despite current challenges, Betolar's international expansion and major new contracts suggest the company is building toward its green cement production goals.
What is Betolar's core technology? The company develops geopolymer-based low-carbon concrete using metal extraction methods to reduce environmental impact.
How significant is the new infrastructure order? The €1.4 million project nearly doubles Betolar's entire 2023 revenue, representing a substantial breakthrough for the young company.
