Five people are missing after the Prospector 5 rig, owned by the Norwegian rig company Borr Drilling, sank off Gabon on Saturday evening. The company said in a stock exchange notice on Sunday morning that 110 of the 115 people on board had been accounted for and were safe.
Extensive search and rescue work is ongoing.
Preliminary information indicates the rig experienced a punch-through event during preload activities, resulting in a loss of stability and subsequent sinking. The rig is owned and operated by Borr Drilling and is contracted to drill for BW Energy off Gabon on the west coast of Africa.
“We are deeply concerned for those who remain unaccounted for and everyone affected by this incident,” said Borr Drilling chief executive Bruno Morand. “Our immediate priority is supporting the ongoing search and rescue efforts and the welfare of all personnel involved.”
Panoro Energy, which holds a 17.5% stake in the field, said production had been halted. It said there were no reports of damage or accidental discharges.
