The departing director of Central Finland's welfare region will receive approximately 140,000 euros in severance payments. Jan Tollet requested to step down from his leadership position this week.
The compensation package includes six months of salary plus three months of pay during the notice period. This arrangement was confirmed by the welfare region's board chair.
The severance terms were previously established in Tollet's management contract. He originally started the position in August 2022 with a monthly salary of 15,000 euros.
His compensation increased over time, leading to the current severance amount. The welfare region announced Tollet's departure decision on Wednesday.
Tollet chose to resign because he no longer had the confidence of the regional board. This situation raises questions about leadership transitions in Finland's recently reformed welfare system.
Finland's welfare system underwent major restructuring in 2023, creating new regional administrations. These changes aimed to improve healthcare and social services across the country.
The substantial severance payment comes at a time when many Finnish municipalities face budget pressures. Such executive compensation packages often draw public scrutiny during economic uncertainty.
