The director of Central Finland's welfare region has stepped down. Jan Tollet announced his resignation after losing the trust of the regional board. He stated he no longer had sufficient conditions to continue his work.
Tollet acknowledged the region faces major challenges ahead. He expressed confidence that Central Finland would overcome its operational and financial difficulties. The welfare region provides healthcare and social services across central Finland.
Board chair Maria Kaisa Aula confirmed they will soon begin searching for a new director. Social and health services director Kati Kallimo will serve as interim leader during the transition.
The resignation follows last week's financial report showing deeper-than-expected deficits. The welfare region projects an 81 million euro shortfall this year.
Tollet had previously promised cost-cutting measures this autumn. Now the region must find new leadership to address the financial crisis.
Chief medical officer Petri Kivinen outlined the severity of the situation. Covering the entire deficit would require closing all service points or dismissing half of the region's 12,000 employees.
The welfare region has also entered an evaluation procedure. This suggests systemic problems beyond just financial management.
The leadership change comes at a critical moment for public services in central Finland. Finding both financial solutions and stable leadership presents a dual challenge for the region.
