An appeals court has increased the prison sentence for a driver involved in a fatal collision at a Helsinki intersection. The Helsinki Court of Appeal raised Veeti Nikunen's punishment to four years imprisonment for the October 2022 crash that killed two people.
The accident occurred when Nikunen's car collided with another vehicle turning left at the intersection of Western Mannerheimintie and Hornhattulantie. The 21-year-old driver had seven passengers in his car at the time of impact, including three riding in the trunk space.
Two occupants of the turning vehicle died at the scene. All passengers in Nikunen's car sustained injuries.
The court rejected arguments that the other driver's intoxication or driving ban should reduce Nikunen's sentence. Judges determined these factors did not justify leniency in this fatal traffic accident case.
This ruling demonstrates Finland's strict approach to serious traffic violations, particularly those resulting in deaths. The court's decision to increase the original sentence suggests authorities view the circumstances as particularly severe.
Hornhattula is a district in Helsinki where the crash occurred at a signal-controlled intersection. Finnish courts typically impose harsh penalties for dangerous driving that causes fatalities, especially when multiple safety violations are present.
