The dike between Ballum and Rømødæmningen received 27 million kroner from the National Coastal Fund two years ago. This covers slightly less than half the required reinforcement costs. Local authorities and the dike association must cover the remaining amount. Dike warden Thorben Kofoed Hansen confirms they still need approximately 20 million kroner. He expresses frustration about the funding delay. 'The risk is there tomorrow,' Hansen states. 'It is surprising that people don't understand the seriousness. They are gambling with safety in Tønder Municipality.'
Hansen notes Tønder already received larger subsidies than many municipalities. He questions why local government hasn't allocated more resources. Mayor Jørgen Popp Petersen from the Schleswig Party defends the cautious approach. 'We don't know the exact price yet, so we are waiting,' Petersen says. 'Then we will negotiate with the coastal directorate hoping to get more support money.'

Hansen describes the community's disappointment with political inaction. 'We keep hearing they will find the money,' he notes. 'But nothing happens and it is extremely disappointing.' Farmer Pørksen puts the financial need in perspective. '20 million kroner is not much money for a dike when you consider how many people and animals it must protect.'
