Danish homeowners are flocking to purchase special rain insurance after several years of extreme weather. Multiple cloudbursts and heavy rainfall have made residents seek protection beyond just raincoats and umbrellas.
Insurance company If reports overwhelming interest in their 'extended water' coverage option. This add-on policy protects customers against various types of water damage to their properties.
Customer numbers for this specific coverage have exploded since 2020. The company recorded over 100 percent growth in policyholders during this period.
This surge follows Denmark experiencing exceptionally wet years. Last year became the wettest ever recorded in Danish history. This summer ranked as the rainiest in 13 years.
Helene Ibsen, housing chief at If, explained the trend in a statement. "Danes have clearly become more aware of securing their homes after years of massive rainfall," she said. "This has driven many to choose additional coverage."
The insurance trend reflects how climate patterns are changing consumer behavior. Homeowners appear increasingly willing to invest in protection against weather-related damages that were once considered rare occurrences.
What does this mean for insurance markets? Companies may need to adjust their risk models as extreme weather becomes more common across Scandinavia.
