Medication management issues have prompted protests from inmates in Danish prisons. In response, Denmark’s Prison and Probation Service, formerly known as Kriminalforsorgen, is launching a comprehensive review of health-related complaints. Director Ina Eliasen confirmed the agency will examine all formal complaints about healthcare treatment from the past five years to identify recurring concerns. The review also includes an analysis of reports from the Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman over the last decade. Eliasen said they plan to gather a wide group of healthcare professionals to challenge current practices and suggest improvements. “We’re asking experts what they would look at if they wanted to enhance healthcare delivery inside our prisons,” she explained. A new health screening procedure is being tested to improve initial inmate assessments by guiding staff with more precise questioning. This initiative follows a recent complaint email sent by inmate representatives in open prisons across West Denmark. According to Ekstra Bladet, the letter included anonymized cases of serious symptoms allegedly not addressed promptly, along with criticism over medication handling, specifically the removal of ADHD prescriptions. Eliasen emphasized that medication decisions are made by physicians, just as they would be outside prison walls, and denied systematic withdrawal of prescribed drugs.
