Danish Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen is preparing a major crackdown on private parking companies. The minister says he will make it nearly impossible for firms to operate if they continue issuing illegal fines. This follows a flood of nearly 500 complaints from Danish motorists in just two days.

The government opened a special email inbox for citizens to report illegally issued parking charges. The minister said the volume of complaints shows the problem is widespread. He plans to organize the complaints by company and pursue the worst offenders first.

This is not a new issue. The minister tightened regulations earlier this year. The rules now clearly state that a parking charge must be placed visibly on the vehicle or handed directly to the driver. The previous loophole, which allowed companies to send notices later if they claimed they couldn't access the vehicle, was removed.

Despite this regulatory change, numerous companies continue the practice. They use access to closed vehicle registration terminals to obtain car owner details after the fact. They then send fines by mail without ever placing a physical notice on the car.

The Danish Motorists' Federation (FDM) has long criticized this practice. They argue it exploits motorists and bypasses the legal requirement for immediate, visible notification.

Minister Danielsen outlined his enforcement plan. Companies caught sending illegal demands will receive one warning. If they continue, the government will revoke their access to the crucial vehicle registration terminals. Without this access, a parking company cannot identify vehicle owners to issue any fines at all. The minister stated this would make their business model unworkable.

He was blunt about his reasoning. He said companies that refuse to follow the rules do not deserve to operate. The minister acknowledged that individual employee errors can happen. He insisted, however, that the current pattern represents systemic abuse, not simple mistakes.

The parking industry's trade association declined an interview request. In a written statement, they said they expect all member companies to operate within their permits from the Danish Motor Agency. The association welcomed follow-up from authorities on permit conditions.

This crackdown has significant business implications. The private parking sector operates across Copenhagen business districts and the wider Øresund region. Stricter enforcement could impact the revenue models of several firms. It also highlights ongoing tensions between consumer protection and private enforcement in Danish commerce.

The government's move signals a shift toward stronger consumer rights in routine commercial interactions. For international businesses and expats in Denmark, it clarifies the legal standards for parking enforcement. The outcome will test the balance between regulatory authority and private sector operations in Denmark's service economy.
