A new bus route launches on Wednesday to transport general practitioners and hospital staff from Copenhagen to Maribo on Lolland. The Zealand Region announced this initiative in a press release.
The bus will run from Flintholm Station in Frederiksberg to Maribo. This transportation service aims to make working in doctor-shortage areas more attractive.
Trine Birk Andersen, regional council chair in Zealand Region, explained the situation. "Today we have the fewest doctors in the areas where the need is greatest," she said. "This simply doesn't work."
Two similar bus routes will also open from the capital to Nykøbing Zealand and Kalundborg. Each route will have morning and afternoon departures. All buses feature tables, power outlets, and internet to enable work during transit.
These new routes supplement three existing ones where hospital doctors travel from the capital area to hospitals in Slagelse and Nykøbing Falster. The expanded service now allows general practitioners to use the transportation scheme too.
This practical solution addresses Denmark's ongoing challenge of uneven doctor distribution across regions. While bus routes provide temporary relief, they highlight the persistent difficulty in attracting medical professionals to rural areas despite various incentives.
