A new safety partnership in Northern Denmark aims to prevent dangerous traffic situations when emergency vehicles respond to calls. The system alerts drivers seconds before ambulances or fire trucks approach their location. This gives motorists crucial extra time to pull over safely.
Emergency response teams frequently encounter challenges navigating through dense traffic. Drivers often miss approaching sirens due to modern soundproof vehicles or personal audio devices. Kristian Arntsen, operational manager at North Jutland Emergency Services, explains the problem clearly. He says drivers sometimes notice emergency vehicles too late because they're adjusting their radio or wearing headphones.
Private company Saphe developed the innovative warning solution. The technology will notify approximately one million Danish drivers using their app about approaching emergency vehicles. These alerts will arrive about 20 seconds before the emergency vehicle reaches their location. The system already warns users about speed controls and accidents.
Testing began several months ago across multiple regions. Full implementation is scheduled for the second half of November. Thirty operational vehicles in Aalborg, Nibe, Thisted and Frederikshavn will receive the equipment. Drivers in these vehicles will simply press a button when responding to emergencies. This automatically triggers notifications to nearby Saphe users.
The service comes at no cost to either users or emergency services. Beyond North Jutland Emergency Services and PreMed ambulance service, the project includes East Jutland Fire Department and Central West Fire & Rescue. Saphe's director expressed hope that eventually all Danish emergency vehicles will adopt the technology.
