A sophisticated roadside assistance scam is targeting Danish motorists, using fake websites and logos to impersonate major insurance companies. The scheme has led to police investigations and warnings from legitimate firms. This fraud highlights growing digital security risks for both consumers and established Danish brands.

Midt- and Vestsjællands Police report five formal complaints so far. Three men in their twenties and thirties connected to the same company have been charged. The scam involves creating websites that closely mimic legitimate insurance providers like Tryg. When drivers search for help with flat tires or breakdowns, they encounter these fraudulent sites.

One victim, Pil Kløvedal Nørgaard, described nearly falling for the scheme. She found what appeared to be Tryg's roadside assistance through an online search. The fake service offered help within ninety minutes but demanded a 3,000 kroner upfront payment via a special link. Nørgaard discovered the fraud at the last moment by double-checking her insurance coverage. She noted the fake site used Tryg's exact colors and branding, calling the operation 'so smooth.'

Police Commissioner Bjarke Thanning warned drivers to verify who they contact for towing services. He advised never paying unreasonable bills and instead contacting both your insurer and police. The scam typically targets people in stressful situations who need quick help.

Tryg, one of Denmark's largest insurers, confirmed awareness of the fraud. The company stated it has zero tolerance for such misuse of its brand. Tryg is investigating 21 relevant cases and has worked to shut down the fraudulent website. A company spokesperson said they are assessing whether to notify more customers about how to access genuine Tryg services.

SOS Dansk Autohjælp, Denmark's primary roadside assistance provider, also issued guidance. Director Jan Bøjstrup Christensen emphasized that their vehicles are always bright yellow with clear logos. He advised drivers to always ask which company a responder represents.

This incident reflects broader challenges in Denmark's digital economy. As commerce moves online, criminals exploit the trust consumers place in established brands. For companies like Tryg, headquartered in Copenhagen's Ballerup district, brand protection becomes both a customer service and security priority. The case may prompt stricter verification processes for service listings on search engines.

The Øresund region, with its high concentration of commuters and international business traffic, is particularly vulnerable to such cross-border fraud. The police investigation continues as authorities work to identify the full scope of the operation. Consumers are urged to bookmark official contact pages for their insurance providers rather than relying on search results during emergencies.
