Denmark's heavy rainfall finally stopped on Thursday after days of warnings. The relief comes with a new weather challenge. Scattered showers and powerful winds up to storm strength now sweep across the country.
Meteorologist Jesper Eriksen from Denmark's Meteorological Institute described the changing conditions. "It starts with gray and wet, then becomes windy and beautiful," he said with a rhyme and laugh about Thursday's weather.
Between Wednesday and Thursday, up to 40 millimeters of rain fell across many regions. "Many places have had rain almost all of Wednesday, and that's how Thursday will begin too," Eriksen explained.
During Thursday, the steady rain stopped but made way for scattered showers and severe wind conditions. "It has rained for a long time, so there will be some gigantic puddles," the meteorologist noted.
The clearing weather will spread from Western Jutland eastward. "The further west you are, the sooner the rain will stop," Eriksen stated.
No dry weather guarantees exist yet though. "Following the rain will come scattered showers around the country," Eriksen said. The situation worsens with increasing winds.
"Simultaneously the wind increases and becomes steady to strong. On Bornholm we're forecasting wind gusts up to storm strength," he explained.
The meteorologist promised clearer weather ahead. "November will start with a rather mild weather type for the season," Eriksen said about the coming weekend.
"November is autumn's last month, but we'll get some rather mild temperatures at the beginning of the month, up to 15 degrees on one day, and that's not normal for November," the meteorologist concluded.
While the rain ending brings relief, the immediate shift to storm conditions means Danes face different weather challenges. The unusual mild temperatures forecast for early November contrast sharply with the current severe conditions.
