The Eastern Uusimaa Police Department has fired a sergeant major convicted of accepting bribes. The officer received money from a mother seeking information about her son's criminal cases.
The Hyvinkää District Court delivered the verdict on September 16. Police authorities announced the dismissal on Friday.
The officer accessed police database information for the mother. He received over 7,000 euros in cash and MobilePay transfers between 2021 and 2023.
A police statement said the dismissal decision stems directly from the court's bribery conviction. The court found the officer accepted gifts intended to influence his official duties.
He received a conditional prison sentence for bribery offenses.
The dismissal notice stated that public trust and legal certainty require special standards for police conduct. The department found the officer demonstrated "completely inappropriate unreliability" through his actions.
Authorities said he "irreversibly crossed a line that cannot be considered acceptable." His behavior endangered public trust in police work and lost confidence from both employer and colleagues.
The mother involved faced separate charges for offering bribes.
This case highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining police integrity despite Finland's generally low corruption levels. The systematic nature of payments over several years suggests deeper accountability issues than isolated misconduct.
