Senior citizens living in Danish care homes must cover their own meal expenses. Most municipalities charge residents the highest amount permitted by law. New data reveals the extent of these costs across Denmark.

The maximum monthly rate for care home meals reached 4,113 kroner this year. Sixty-two municipalities charge this full amount. Only thirteen municipalities keep costs below 4,000 kroner monthly.

Elderly advocacy organization Ældre Sagen warns these prices create financial pressure. Many families now consider opting out of meal programs entirely.

Senior consultant Nina Bruun expressed concern about affordability. "We've reached a price level where many people struggle to participate," she stated.

In Ikast-Brande Municipality, Brian Christensen sparked local debate about his mother's situation. Inga Christensen pays full price despite eating small portions. He questions why the system lacks flexibility for residents with smaller appetites.

Bruun warns that skipping meals creates health risks. "If families decline food services due to cost concerns, we risk facing serious malnutrition among elderly residents," she explained.

Some municipalities choose different approaches. Vallensbæk Municipality charges just 2,684 kroner monthly despite being allowed to collect more.

Social and Health Committee chair Jytte Bendtsen explained their philosophy. "We consciously stand out positively," she said. "Our meals are prepared from scratch locally, not delivered from central kitchens. We value this highly in Vallensbæk."

In Ikast-Brande, mayoral candidate Kasper Pauli Pedersen wants to explore cheaper meal solutions. Brian Christensen believes flexible pricing would help residents like his mother.

But welfare researcher Kurt Houlberg warns customization increases costs. "More meal variations and portion sizes require more bureaucracy and lose economies of scale," he noted. "This makes individual meals more expensive for both municipalities and residents."

Municipalities cannot profit from elderly meal programs. Most supplement costs from municipal budgets. Ikast-Brande adds 1.3 million kroner annually to balance their food service budget.

Houlberg explains this ultimately becomes a political choice. Municipal councils decide whether to fund cheaper elderly meals or other priorities.

Ældre Sagen argues national government intervention is needed. While the government recently allocated 200 million kroner to reduce meal costs for seniors living at home, similar support doesn't extend to care home residents.

Bruun states the current situation remains unsustainable. "Right now, it simply costs too much," she concluded.

The wide cost variation between municipalities shows how local politics directly impacts elderly citizens' living expenses. This creates unequal conditions for seniors across different regions of Denmark.
