Election Poster Set on Fire in Aalborg as Police Investigate Vandalism

A political election poster was deliberately set on fire overnight in Aalborg, Denmark. The incident occurred in Nyhavnsgade at 5 AM, less than 24 hours after campaign posters were permitted for display.

North Jutland Police are treating the case seriously according to duty officer Martin Møller. "We take this very seriously," he stated. "People should not commit vandalism, especially not against election materials."

Police confirmed they have filed an official report and will review area surveillance footage. The targeted poster belonged to Jan Nymark Thaysen, lead candidate for the Venstre party in Aalborg's municipal election.

Thaysen expressed hope that this was merely youthful mischief rather than personal targeting. "But even if it's boyish pranks, it's still wrong," he noted during a press briefing.

The candidate described feeling affected by the incident amid growing debates about election poster usage. "I become sad regardless of the reason," Thaysen said. "I experience democracy being under pressure, and tolerance for differing opinions is unfortunately narrowing."

Emergency services responded quickly and extinguished the flames before they could spread. This vandalism case highlights increasing tensions in Danish local politics as election day approaches.

Local election vandalism in Denmark often reflects broader political frustrations rather than isolated incidents. The timing suggests coordinated opposition to campaign activities.
