Equinor, the Norwegian energy company, confirmed that the second phase of the Johan Sverdrup field has begun production. The announcement was made at an industry event in Stavanger. The field is located in the North Sea and is expected to add up to 200,000 barrels of oil per day at its peak. Phase 1 of the Johan Sverdrup field began production in 2019. The total investment for both phases is around 170 billion Norwegian kroner. This startup was slightly delayed by technical issues that occurred in the last quarter. Now, oil production is set to begin gradually. CEO Anders Opedal stated that the ramp-up of production will be gradual over the next few weeks. He explained that the company is taking a measured approach to stability. This phase is expected to significantly boost overall Norwegian oil production by roughly 15 percent from this development alone. This is a major milestone for Equinor and the Norwegian oil industry. The Johan Sverdrup field is one of the largest discoveries on the Norwegian continental shelf. The successful startup of Phase 2 will help maintain Norway's position as a key energy supplier in Europe.
