A Finnish court sentenced a 66-year-old man to five and a half years in prison for attempting to kill his ex-wife. The attack occurred at Tampere Central Square on August 9.

The victim was walking with her new partner and their young child when the assault happened. The couple had just left a fast food restaurant where the attacker had also been present.

The man told authorities that jealousy motivated his actions. The court noted the attack surprised the victim completely.

Their four-year-old child witnessed the violent incident. This factor increased the severity of the punishment.

The court convicted the man of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and violating a restraining order. He admitted to the assault and restraining order violations during the trial.

Prosecutors had sought a murder attempt conviction, but the court found insufficient evidence of premeditation. Still, the judge determined the man intended to kill his former partner.

The sentence includes compensation for medical costs, temporary suffering, and stained clothing. The written verdict will be issued within one week.

Domestic violence cases often escalate when new partners enter the picture. This tragedy shows how children become unintended victims of adult conflicts.
