A young woman escaped serious injury by fighting and screaming when an unknown man attacked her on a jogging trail. The assault occurred last October in Laajavuori forest park near Jyväskylä, Finland.
The victim's lawyer stated the attacker only stopped and fled because of her self-defense actions. Without her resistance, the lawyer believes charges could have included sexual assault or homicide.
Police identified the 22-year-old suspect through DNA evidence found on a knife and clothing recovered from the forest. The man admitted to assault but denied planning a serious violent crime.
Prosecutors say the man knocked the woman down, pressed his foot on her, and held his hands over her mouth and neck. They charged him with assault and preparation of a serious crime against life and health.
The case highlights ongoing safety concerns in Finland's popular nature areas. Many locals use these forest trails for daily exercise throughout the dark winter months.
Authorities confirmed the suspect had brought a knife to the scene but never used it during the attack. A police dog later located the weapon and discarded clothing along the man's escape route.
The court heard the case this week in Central Finland District Court. Finland's extensive network of forest trails remains popular despite occasional safety incidents.
