Finland's customs authorities report alarming increases in drug seizures across the country. Customs Control Director Hannu Sinkkonen expressed deep concern about the nation's drug situation during a recent media briefing. He stated the current trend cannot continue much longer without serious consequences.
National drug statistics show a sharp deterioration according to customs data. Seizures have increased dramatically across multiple substance categories. The customs service confiscated 1,946 kilograms of drugs so far this year, compared to 1,276 kilograms during the same period last year. This represents a substantial year-over-year increase that worries officials.
The most dramatic change involves the synthetic drug alpha-PVP, commonly known as 'peukku' in Finnish street slang. Between January and September, customs seized 10.6 kilograms of this dangerous synthetic stimulant. Last year during the same period, seizures measured only a few hundred grams. This represents an explosive hundredfold increase that signals a major shift in the drug market.
Sinkkonen commented on the societal impact of this trend. "We've become aware of the alpha-PPV situation in recent years and how much it harms society through street scenes and disruptive behavior," he said. "If this expands much more, society will become much less safe."
Prescription drug abuse also shows troubling patterns. Customs has confiscated nearly 200,000 more pharmaceutical tablets than during the comparable period last year. Common recreational drugs follow similar upward trajectories. Cocaine seizures jumped from approximately 44 kilograms to nearly 78 kilograms. Marijuana confiscations increased from 831 kilograms to 932 kilograms.
Synthetic drugs concern officials most for several reasons. Price plays a major role in their popularity. Synthetic substances often cost less than traditional drugs. Their effects also differ from conventional narcotics, creating unpredictable user behavior. Fashion trends within drug-using communities contribute to their spread. When a substance gains popularity, usage increases rapidly.
Finland faces particular challenges with synthetic drugs due to its geographic position. The country's long border with Russia and extensive coastline create smuggling opportunities. Nordic countries generally maintain strict drug policies, but synthetic substances present new enforcement difficulties.
