Finland's transport authority announced winter speed limits take effect this week. The restrictions will activate mostly on Wednesday and by Friday at the latest. Road crews may begin changing signs as early as Monday if local conditions require it.
Main roads will see limits drop to 80 kilometers per hour. Motorways will maintain 100 km/h restrictions. Variable speed limits on some motorways could remain at 120 km/h through November if weather permits.
All motorways will transition to winter limits starting December 1st. The seasonal changes aim to improve traffic safety during winter months. They also reduce pavement wear from studded tires.
Studded tire wear increases dramatically when speeds exceed 80 km/h. Finnish law requires winter tires from November through March when conditions demand them. Drivers may use studded tires whenever weather requires, unlike Central European countries that impose speed restrictions.
A new tire safety campaign recommends maximum 100 km/h speeds for studded tires. This limitation could slow pavement deterioration and encourage switching to friction winter tires. Finland imposes no usage time restrictions on non-studded winter tires.
The transition reflects Finland's practical approach to winter driving challenges. While maintaining mobility, authorities balance safety concerns with infrastructure preservation during harsh Nordic conditions.
