Finland's most terrible village road of the year has been chosen in Kittilä municipality. The winning road stretches between Raattama and Tepasto in Finnish Lapland. This 30-kilometer gravel road forms part of a 47-kilometer route described as extremely poor condition.

Local residents face daily challenges navigating this deteriorated roadway. The road serves numerous villages in northern Finland where maintenance issues directly impact everyday life.

Anja Keskitalo submitted the road to the competition. She explained how the poor condition affects local communities. Many northern villages depend on these long gravel roads for basic transportation needs.

Finland's Road Association director Simo Takalammi expressed concern about funding allocation. He stated that low-traffic roads often receive insufficient maintenance resources. This creates problems for remote communities across northern regions.

The competition organizer Timo Metsäjoki shared personal experience driving the road during spring thaw. He acknowledged the beautiful landscape surrounding the route but described terrible driving conditions during muddy periods. The road becomes particularly challenging during seasonal transitions.

Finland's Road Association and Finnish Villages organization ran the October competition to highlight rural infrastructure issues. Public voting on agricultural media websites determined the winner from nine finalists.

Northern Finland's extensive gravel road network requires consistent maintenance that often falls short of actual needs. This competition highlights the gap between urban and rural infrastructure investment across the Nordic region.
