Fraudsters have tried to trick executives at several Finnish companies into making money transfers, Itä-Uusimaa police said, with the suspected proceeds possibly reaching up to two million euros, according to Iltalehti, Keskisuomalainen, Helsingin Sanomat and Yle.
Detective Chief Inspector Lasse Lagerbohm of Itä-Uusimaa police said officers have identified several suspects in different parts of Finland. "Police have identified several suspected acts of the kind described above in different parts of Finland, and their combined criminal proceeds may rise to as much as two million euros," Lagerbohm said.
According to police, company executives have been approached through various messaging apps from foreign telephone numbers. The fraudsters have also posed as company executives and claimed that payment requests were connected to corporate acquisitions.
Police urged companies to be cautious about money transfer requests that arrive through atypical communication channels.
