The officer received a written warning while Vornanen faces multiple criminal charges for the shooting. Both cases will proceed through Finland's legal system this autumn.

Finnish MP's gun incident sparks police data breach

A police officer in eastern Finland accessed a parliament member's personal data without authorization. The breach occurred the same weekend MP Timo Vornanen fired a handgun outside a Helsinki bar. The officer received a written warning for checking Vornanen's gun permits in the police system. Vornanen faces criminal charges for the shooting incident, with his trial scheduled for November.

The data breach happened on the Sunday following the Friday night shooting. The officer accessed Vornanen's firearm license information three times while off duty. He claimed he wanted to verify if Vornanen's other weapons should be temporarily confiscated.

Vornanen holds a civilian position at the East Finland Police Department in Joensuu. His confrontation with another person at a bar on April 26 led to him firing his weapon into the ground outside the establishment.

The shooting caused Vornanen's expulsion from his parliamentary group. He now sits as an independent MP in Finland's 200-seat legislature. Police investigators discovered two officers had accessed Vornanen's data without proper authorization during their probe.

Vornanen faces multiple charges including endangerment, firearms offenses, assault, and illegal threats. He denies all allegations against him. The case highlights concerning overlaps between personal conflicts and professional access to sensitive information.

Why would an officer check a colleague's gun permits after working hours? The incident raises questions about police data security protocols and appropriate use of official systems.
