Finnish Newspaper Group Launches New Mobile App Platform

A major Finnish media group is rolling out new mobile applications for six regional newspapers starting in early November. The flagship publication Ilkka-Pohjalainen will receive a completely redesigned app while five local newspapers get their own dedicated applications for the first time.

The updated app interface will feature daily news streams, search functionality, and access to newest and most popular content. Digital development manager Jussi Jokipii explained the changes in a company statement.

He said the most important improvement for users will be significantly expanded news coverage. The app will now include all digital news content alongside traditional digital editions of print newspapers.

The final edition using the current app technology will publish on November 1. After that date, service continues automatically in the new application.

Most users won't need to take any action as the update will happen automatically. Those needing manual updates can download the new version from their device's app store. The updated app requires at least iOS 15 or Android 8 operating systems.

Jokipii noted that the most substantial changes happen behind the scenes as the company synchronizes technology across all its publications. He advised readers to simply ensure their app updates properly after November 2 and explore the new features.

Login functionality will be temporarily disabled during the transition period to make exploration of new content as straightforward as possible.

The five local newspapers receiving their own dedicated apps for the first time include Jurvan Sanomat, Järviseutu, Komiat, Suupohjan Sanomat, and Viiskunta. Two urban publications, Eparin and Vaasaa, will remain available for free reading through the main Ilkka-Pohjalainen application.

A new 'newspaper shelf' feature will allow subscribers to read all their subscribed print editions through the single application. The core mission remains delivering comprehensive local news and services to readers throughout western Finland.

The company plans to gradually add requested features like crossword puzzles and familiar games from their website. Users can also submit news tips directly through the application.

Development work continues beyond this initial update according to Jokipii, with new content and functionality planned for regular introduction. This coordinated app rollout represents a substantial digital investment for regional Finnish media, which faces the same audience migration to mobile platforms affecting publishers worldwide.

Regional newspapers in Finland increasingly depend on digital subscriptions as print circulation declines, making functional mobile applications essential for their survival.
