The Finnish municipality of Äänekoski has extended its street and park lighting hours. The changes aim to improve safety during the darkest period of the year. New lighting schedules will remain in effect until permanent snow cover arrives.
Street lights now operate at full capacity until 11 PM each evening. After that time, one-third of lights remain active overnight. This means every third street light stays illuminated through the night hours.
Municipal officials explained the timing in a statement. They said the extended lighting will continue until winter snow becomes permanent. At that point, the town will revert to traditional winter lighting schedules.
Äänekoski sits in central Finland's Lakeland region. The area experiences extreme seasonal darkness during winter months. Many Nordic municipalities adjust public lighting to address safety concerns during dark periods.
This practical approach balances energy conservation with public safety needs. The town clearly links lighting changes to observable weather conditions rather than fixed calendar dates.
