The chairperson of Finland's Truth Party walked free from custody on Friday after an extraordinary court session. Jaana Kavonius faced repeated interruptions and was moved to a separate room during proceedings at the Western Uusimaa District Court.
Kavonius had been detained since mid-October on suspicion of multiple stalking and defamation offenses. The court ordered her immediate release despite prosecutors' objections, citing proportionality concerns.
She told reporters afterward she plans to continue 'telling the truth.'
What charges does she face? Prosecutors allege numerous stalking and aggravated defamation crimes against officials and ordinary citizens. Some charges involve a ten-year-old child victim.
The court hearing took several unusual turns. Kavonius interrupted the presiding judge over five times within the first ten minutes. Officials then transferred her to another courtroom where she participated remotely.
The judge muted her microphone during some remote interventions. Kavonius maintained the entire process was unlawful and challenged the judge's impartiality.
Her court-appointed lawyer missed the hearing due to illness. Kavonius had previously tried to replace him but the request wasn't formally approved.
Prosecutors seek several years imprisonment for the alleged crimes. The longest sentencing demand exceeds three years confinement. Some charges may have exceeded statutory limitations.
The Truth Party leader disappeared from public view last spring before authorities located and detained her in October. She had become known for attending protests dressed as Star Wars princess Leia with a lightsaber.
Her party's platform describes Russian security demands toward Finland and neighbors as justified. The group also opposes mainstream media, COVID vaccinations, and considers Finland's EU agreements invalid.
Court documents reveal specific allegations. Kavonius allegedly labeled individuals as criminals, cult members, and a 'psychopathic Nazi.' Prosecutors say her false statements reached tens of thousands online.
The case continues with a main hearing scheduled for later dates. For now, the controversial politician remains free while preparing her defense.
