The Viitasaari youth council will propose increasing school swimming lessons this autumn. They want better water safety education in local schools.
The council chairperson Vanamo Vihava stated they particularly want more pool instruction for elementary students. The youth council also hopes for practical rescue exercises in open water. These would involve cooperation with lake rescue teams.
Vihava explained the main goal involves expanding swimming education for grades 5-6. Rescue practice sessions would continue through middle school.
The youth council suggests students should prove swimming skills individually if they skip regular lessons. Currently this testing only happens in middle school according to Vihava.
Recent drowning accidents prompted this safety initiative. Finland has thousands of lakes, making swimming skills essential for children.
This proposal addresses a genuine safety concern in a country where water is everywhere during summer months. The timing makes sense given recent tragedies, though implementing more swimming lessons will require budget increases for schools.
