The first significant snowfall of the season has hit Western Sweden, creating widespread transportation chaos and dangerous road conditions. Meteorologists issued a yellow weather warning for snow across the region as the winter weather arrived earlier than usual.
Snow began falling around 7 AM on Wednesday morning, with forecasts predicting between five and fifteen centimeters of accumulation. The sudden snowfall created immediate problems for commuters and transportation systems throughout the Gothenburg area.
Maria Svedestig, a meteorologist with Sweden's national weather service, confirmed the severity of the weather system. She said the snow would continue throughout the day with potentially significant impacts on travel conditions.
Transportation authorities reported multiple incidents across the region. A train stoppage occurred between Gothenburg Central Station and Ytterby due to a points failure and wildlife collision. Although authorities cleared the stoppage by 8:30 AM, delays continued along the route.
Tram services also experienced disruptions when a bus crashed into a fence between Angereds Centrum and Gamlestads Torg. Service resumed by 9:30 AM, but other routes faced cancellations and delays throughout the morning.
Olle Kohanovskij, a disruption coordinator with the regional transport authority, explained the challenges. He said replacement buses couldn't operate safely due to icy conditions. Commuters faced difficulties finding alternative transportation options.
The heavy snowfall in a short period caused particular problems on Gothenburg's hills. Antonius Gibson Knevel from the Traffic Management Center described the situation. He noted that Kallebäcksbacken and other steep inclines saw multiple heavy vehicles stuck, creating long traffic queues.
Multiple accidents occurred on major highways. A five-car collision on E20 near Partillemotet closed two lanes during rescue operations. Emergency services reopened the lanes by 10:20 AM after completing their work.
Another incident involved a truck trailer that slid into a ditch at Klarebergsmotet, near the E6 highway entrance. Rescue services confirmed this accident had major traffic implications. A separate car went off the road at Flodamotet on E20, though police reported no serious injuries.
Rescue services responded to multiple weather-related accidents throughout the Gothenburg region. They warned that traffic queues could form in several locations as the snow continues.
This early winter weather poses challenges for Swedish municipalities that typically have more time to prepare their winter maintenance routines. The sudden snowfall caught many drivers unprepared, with summer tires still on vehicles and winter driving skills rusty from the off-season.
