A man stands accused of violently assaulting former Finns Party MP Tom Packalén in a Helsinki restaurant. The attack occurred at Restaurant Teatteri in June 2023.
The prosecutor states the suspect punched Packalén in the face, causing him to fall to the floor. The assault continued with kicks to Packalén's head area while he lay defenseless.
Packalén suffered a three-centimeter head wound, swelling on the left side of his jaw, and bruising around his eye. Medical reports confirm these injuries resulted from the attack.
The prosecutor describes the assault as particularly brutal and cruel. They are seeking approximately two years of unconditional prison time for the accused.
The suspect was already serving a conditional prison sentence for previous crimes. Prosecutors want that sentence enforced alongside new penalties.
Packalén served as a member of parliament from 2011 until 2023. He works as a police officer in his civilian profession and currently serves as a deputy councilor in Helsinki.
The Helsinki District Court heard the case this week. Both the severity of the assault and the suspect's criminal history factor into the sentencing demands.
This case highlights concerning violence against public figures in Finland. The brutal nature of attacking a fallen victim raises serious questions about public safety.
