The coldest temperatures are beginning to ease, though sub-zero conditions will persist across Finland. According to meteorologist Eveliina Tuovinen from the Finnish Meteorological Institute, next week’s temperatures are expected to hover around minus 10 degrees Celsius nationwide, with variations depending on cloud cover. Tuovinen explains that clearer skies at night can intensify the cold into the following day, but daylight is now contributing more noticeably to warming compared to January. “If it’s been clear overnight, that easily affects daytime temperatures too,” she says. “But right now, the sun is already making a difference. It’s providing warmth compared to what we saw in January.” For Sunday specifically, Tuovinen divides Finland into three temperature zones. In Lapland, daytime lows range from minus 15 to minus 20 degrees. Eastern Finland and areas just south of Lapland, including Kotka, Mikkeli, and Joensuu, will see temperatures between minus 10 and minus 15 degrees, similar to readings near Oulu, Kajaani, and Kuusamo. In western regions such as Turku and Helsinki, mercury will stay between minus 5 and minus 10 degrees. Light snow flurries may occur in the absence of major precipitation systems. “There might be just a little sprinkle of soft, light freezing snow,” Tuovinen notes.
