Gjøl Kro has suspended all food service as its board searches for a new operator. The historic inn announced the temporary closure on Tuesday through its website and social media channels.
The search for a new innkeeper began in late September. Former operator Lone Petersen decided not to extend her contract for personal reasons. Petersen had taken over the establishment in March 2023.
The board seeks an operator or couple passionate about traditional Danish cuisine and guest service. "We hope to find someone who wants to make good food, care for guests, and serve classic inn dishes," the board stated.
This nearly 125-year-old Danish inn recorded modest financial results in its latest fiscal year. It posted a pre-tax profit of approximately 43,000 Danish kroner ($6,200). The previous year showed stronger performance with profits exceeding 100,000 kroner ($14,400).
The temporary closure highlights the challenges facing traditional Nordic inns. Many struggle to balance historical preservation with modern economic realities while maintaining authentic culinary experiences for visitors.
