A correctional officer at Vantaa Prison in Finland pushed a coworker in the neck area in early January. The incident occurred on a prison unit, though officials have not disclosed the exact location or how many staff members were present. According to Annika Finnberg, unit manager at Vantaa Prison, the targeted officer was not injured during the altercation.
The officer responsible for the push resigned before a formal civil service disciplinary process could begin. Finnberg confirmed that such a procedure would have been initiated automatically under guidelines from the Criminal Sanctions Agency (Rise). She emphasized that conflicts between prison guards are extremely rare. Eeva Säisä, head of the Uusimaa Criminal Sanctions Center, noted there are no known statistics on similar cases because incidents like this almost never occur.
Vantaa Prison is a 275-capacity closed facility for men. In January, its occupancy rate reached approximately 120%, exceeding the agency’s defined safe capacity of 90%. Rise described prison overcrowding in Finland as serious during that period. The situation was quickly resolved, and inmates did not witness the event, according to Finnberg. The former guard no longer works at the facility.
