Hearing impairments are increasing across Sweden. A new survey reveals about 1.8 million Swedes now live with hearing loss. Both the number and proportion of affected people are growing steadily. The rise is also noticeable in younger age groups.
The Swedish Association of Hard of Hearing People commissioned the study. They propose nationwide hearing screening for everyone over 50. Association chairman Jonas Sahlberg said many wait too long to seek help. This delay creates serious health risks, he explained in a statement.
The group suggests using digital, scientifically validated self-tests. People could complete these tests at home using phones or computers. Sahlberg calls this a simple and cost-effective method to identify healthcare needs. It would make a big difference for individuals and society, he noted.
This push for screening comes as hearing damage becomes more common across age groups. The proposal addresses a clear public health need, though implementing nationwide screening would require substantial resources and coordination.
