Helsinki will replace the historic Arkadiankatu Bridge in the city center next year. The bridge crosses over the popular Baana pedestrian corridor near Hotel President.
Construction begins in January and should finish by late next year. The new bridge will maintain the same appearance as the current structure. The original stone walls from the former railway trench will be preserved.
During construction, traffic will follow detour routes. Trams will run along Fredrikinkatu and Simonkatu streets instead of Arkadiankatu. A temporary pedestrian bridge will be built over Baana for foot traffic.
The Baana corridor underneath the bridge will remain open with only minor exceptions. Bus connections from Kamppi bus terminal will continue but with some detours.
The current bridge was completed in 1924 and needs replacement due to poor condition. Officials confirm the bridge remains safe to use until renovations begin.
The city aims for the new bridge to serve Helsinki for the next century. Helsinki City Museum experts helped plan the renovation to preserve historical elements.
This project demonstrates Helsinki's challenge of maintaining historic infrastructure while meeting modern transportation needs. The careful preservation approach shows respect for the city's architectural heritage despite the inconvenience of construction detours.
