Helsinki officially launches the Christmas season this Saturday with a festive parade starting from Senate Square. The iconic Aleksanterinkatu street lights will illuminate at 4 PM during the procession, marking the 77th time this beloved tradition has brightened the Finnish capital.
Mayor Daniel Sazonov leads the parade for the first time since assuming office. The procession features Santa Claus, dancing groups, circus performers, museum fire trucks, and the historic Sinebrychoff brewery horses with their carriages. This year's parade promises to be more spectacular than previous editions, according to city marketing officials.
The celebration begins with a fanfare from the Guard's Band Ceremony trumpet group. The route starts near Senate Square, travels along Aleksanterinkatu to Mannerheimintie, continues to Pohjoisesplanadi and Unioninkatu before returning to the starting point. The entire parade lasts approximately one hour, with Christmas lights gradually illuminating along Aleksanterinkatu as the procession advances.
City officials recommend spectators watch from Kolmen Sepän Square or along Pohjoisesplanadi due to construction work narrowing viewing space along Aleksanterinkatu. The construction reflects Helsinki's ongoing urban development projects that sometimes temporarily affect traditional event layouts.
Christmas preparations extend beyond the parade route. Stockmann department store already unveiled its magical Christmas window display in early November, featuring a winter-themed Moominvalley installation that has drawn crowds daily. The city's traditional St. Thomas Markets begin on November 28 at Senate Square, continuing until December 22.
New this year, Christmas markets will also appear at Kukontori in the Forum shopping center courtyard from December 1-21. Property investment company Sponda is currently renovating Kukontori to create a more inviting atmosphere. Additional markets will take place at Teurastamo on December 20-21 and Maunula House with Christmas sales and cafes on November 27 and December 11.
Charity opportunities abound during the festivities. Along the main street, visitors can support good causes at We4You Association collection points, Salvation Army stations, and toy collection drives.
