A Helsinki city council member faces scrutiny over his educational qualifications. Mahad Ahmed has used the title of Master in his election campaigns despite completing an unofficial online program.

Ahmed's program consisted of 60 credits from two foreign training institutions. He graduated in autumn 2021 with a "Master of Arts In Protocol & Soft Diplomacy Skills."

An expert consulted for this story said such qualifications are not part of Spain's national higher education system. They typically serve as professional development courses rather than formal degrees.

Ahmed initially claimed his degree represented 180 study credits. He later admitted it was only 60 credits.

The council member told reporters he sees nothing wrong with using the master's title in election advertising.

What constitutes a proper master's degree in Finland? Finnish university master's programs require 120 credits. European ECTS standards typically define master's degrees as 90-120 credits.

The Social Democratic Party's Helsinki chair Taru Reinikainen said they were unaware of Ahmed's 60-credit qualification. She stated the party will add guidelines for candidates to report their qualifications more accurately.

Ahmed entered the city council with 1,702 votes in the spring municipal elections. The controversy raises questions about transparency in political candidate backgrounds.

Political candidates sometimes stretch their qualifications to appear more credible to voters. This case shows why voters should verify candidate claims independently.
