Severe traffic congestion has brought vehicles to a near standstill in Helsinki's Laajasalo neighborhood. Commuters report travel times exceeding one hour for distances that normally take minutes.
Drivers describe traffic moving barely faster than walking speed along the main artery to Laajasalo. One motorist said her journey from Herttoniemi roundabout to central Laajasalo took 75 minutes during Thursday evening's rush hour.
The traffic backup stretched approximately two kilometers according to eyewitness accounts. Construction work has closed one lane on Kruunuvuorenranta-bound traffic, squeezing all vehicles into a single lane.
Local residents point to an apartment construction site at the intersection of Koirasaarentie and Laajasalontie roads as the primary cause. The ongoing boulevard project has eliminated alternative routes through the peninsula area.
One resident observed frustrated drivers using pedestrian paths in desperation to bypass the gridlock. She noted seeing three cars cutting through walking trails near Laajasalo Primary School during the evening commute.
Long-term residents say traffic problems have become frequent since the boulevard development began. Previous street work maintained alternative routes, but current construction has permanently closed those options.
The situation highlights how infrastructure projects can create major disruptions when alternative access routes aren't maintained. Laajasalo's geography as a peninsula with limited entry points exacerbates the problem when main routes are compromised.
Local authorities haven't yet commented on potential solutions or temporary traffic management measures.
