Helsinki is expanding its tram network to connect western neighborhoods with the city center. The city announced the West Trams project on Thursday, which will create a new 10-kilometer rapid tram connection.

The route runs from Kannelmäki through Lassila, Haaga, Munkkiniemi, Meilahti and along Mannerheimintie to downtown. This marks a major infrastructure investment for Finland's capital city.

Planners expect the new line to support approximately 14,000 new homes along the corridor. The project also includes upgrades to municipal utilities and improvements to pedestrian and bicycle paths.

About five kilometers of the route will use existing tram infrastructure. Construction crews will build new tram tracks on Topeliuksenkatu starting from the Mannerheimintie intersection and continuing to Runeberginkatu.

Workers will widen the tram lane on Runeberginkatu between Töölöntori and Arkadiankatu. A completely new tram line will be built on Fredrikinkatu between Bulevardi and Urho Kekkosen katu.

Construction begins in April next year according to current plans. The new rapid tram line 14 will start service in the early 2030s. Helsinki will publish a more detailed construction schedule later.

The first construction sites will likely include the Haaga traffic circle and Vihdintie area. The Infraohjelma Helsinki alliance manages design and construction for the West Trams project.

Similar alliances previously built the Raide-Jokeri light rail, the Kalasatama to Pasila tram line, and the Kruunusilta bridges. These projects demonstrate Helsinki's commitment to expanding public transportation infrastructure.

Project manager Juha Paahtio explained the broader benefits in a statement. "Tram construction offers a rare opportunity to renew critical underground infrastructure across entire neighborhoods. The water supply system being built now should function for at least the next hundred years."

This expansion addresses Helsinki's growing transportation needs as the city continues to develop westward. The project represents one of the largest tram network extensions in recent years.

International readers should note that Helsinki has one of Europe's most extensive tram systems. The network serves as a backbone for the city's public transportation alongside metro and bus services.
