Helsinki commuters regain tram service across Long Bridge starting Monday, November 3. Trams will resume running between Hakaniemi and Kaisaniemi after months of disruption. Multiple bus routes also return to their normal patterns this week.
Transport officials confirm trams 3, 6, 7 and 9 will resume regular routes across the bridge. Routes 5 and 9N return to service while temporary lines 6T, 7B, 7T, 9T and 9B discontinue.
Nearly all tram schedules will see adjustments, according to Helsinki Regional Transport Authority. The changes follow completion of infrastructure upgrades along Siltasaarenkatu street.
Bus network experiences widespread modifications too. Buses traveling from Central Railway Station to Hämeentie will again stop at Siltasaarenkatu stations. Routes using Sörnäinen waterfront return to normal paths via Long Bridge and Hakaniemi bay. Buses terminating at Hakaniemi will resume using Hämeentie.
Specific route changes affect buses 23, 73, 74 and 502. Buses 500 and 510 return to normal routes following completion of Aleksis Kivi street renovation.
Commuters should verify updated schedules and stops through the transport authority's journey planner. The transit normalization marks the end of major infrastructure projects that began in early 2024.
Siltasaarenkatu construction involved replacing water and sewer networks plus other municipal technical systems. Workers renewed tram tracks between Hakaniemi square and Long Bridge while installing new switches for future light rail connections.
The upcoming Crown Bridges light rail will connect Laajasalo, Korkeasaari zoo and Kalasatama to Hakaniemi by 2027.
Aleksis Kivi street renovation included water pipe replacement on surrounding streets, improved pedestrian routes, new tram rails and public transport stop modifications. The project added dedicated bicycle lanes on both sides of the roadway and created a tree-lined pedestrian path down the center. Workers also replaced trees and lighting, completing the project well ahead of schedule.
Helsinki transit improvements demonstrate the city's ongoing commitment to upgrading aging infrastructure while minimizing public inconvenience. The coordinated return of multiple routes suggests effective project management between different city departments.
