Helsinki and Vantaa are seeking Christmas trees over 15 meters tall from local residents. The cities want healthy, bushy trees for prominent squares but won't pay for them. Selected trees will become centerpieces of holiday celebrations starting in late November.

Helsinki and Vantaa Seek Giant Christmas Trees from Residents

Helsinki and Vantaa are asking residents to donate large Christmas trees for prominent city center locations. Both cities seek evergreens over 15 meters tall to serve as their official holiday centerpieces.

Helsinki needs trees for Senate Square and Hakaniemi Market Hall. Vantaa wants a tree for Tikkurila Square outside City Hall. The cities will not pay for donated trees but offer free removal of oversized specimens.

Donated trees must be healthy, bushy, and easily accessible. Helsinki requires 12-15 meter trees for Hakaniemi and 15-20 meter trees for Senate Square. Vantaa seeks trees exceeding 15 meters.

Vantaa officials note that slight leaning doesn't disqualify trees. Both cities prefer trees located near roads for easier access with heavy equipment.

Helsinki's Senate Square tradition dates to the 1930s, making this a chance for residents to participate in historic celebrations. Selected trees become part of the capital's cherished holiday landscape.

Residents must email photos of potential trees to city contacts by November 10. Helsinki's forestry team will collect chosen trees around November 19.

The Senate Square tree lighting occurs November 22 during the opening of Aleksanterinkatu's Christmas Street. Vantaa will inspect candidate trees on-site before felling during November's final week.

This annual search highlights how Nordic cities blend public participation with tradition. The free tree removal incentive makes practical sense for homeowners with overcrowded properties.
