The city of Imatra in southeastern Finland is planning a substantial pier expansion for its passenger harbor. The project carries an estimated price tag of approximately €840,000.

City officials aim to extend and improve the existing pier near Restaurant Nuota. The expansion would allow vessels over 40 meters in length to dock in Imatra.

Erik Forstén, the city's land use director, explained the plans in a statement. "The intention is to expand and enhance the current pier so that even ships longer than 40 meters can dock there," Forstén said.

The pier extension would stretch approximately 40 meters longer than the current structure. This development would enable larger ships to access Imatra's waterfront facilities.

Forstén noted additional practical benefits from the project. "Access to water and septic tanks would also improve," he added.

Most of the pier construction costs would be covered by EU funding. The city is seeking European Union financial support for the majority of the investment.

Imatra sits on the border with Russia in Finland's South Karelia region. The city is known for its impressive Imatrankoski rapids and natural attractions.

This infrastructure investment reflects Imatra's ongoing efforts to boost tourism and waterfront accessibility. The expanded pier could attract larger tourist vessels and enhance the city's appeal as a destination.

Local officials appear confident about securing the necessary EU funding for this waterfront development. The project represents a practical approach to improving maritime infrastructure rather than a flashy tourism initiative.
