Renovation work began in October to revitalize Kuokkala Square and its surrounding areas in Jyväskylä, Finland. The project aims to create an appealing and comfortable unified space connecting the square, nearby Lukkarinpuisto Park, and the Kaloni block adjacent to Kuokkala Church.
Workers have established a large fenced construction zone in front of the church. Several living trees have already been cut down near the construction area.
The felled trees are located at the ends of Kolmospesänkatu street and Siepparinkuja alley.
This renovation represents a common challenge in Nordic urban development—balancing modernization with preserving natural elements. The removal of mature trees often sparks community debate, even when part of larger improvement projects.
