Plans to shut down the Hopearanta care home in Kivijärvi have ignited strong local resistance. The Central Finland Welfare Area's service strategy proposal from October includes closing the facility. Local residents worry about losing elderly care services in their community.
A grassroots movement quickly mobilized to defend Hopearanta. The Kivijärvi Pensioners' Association and local retiree organizations launched a petition drive. They collected nearly 1,400 signatures within just a few days.
Representatives delivered the petition to Tuija Koivisto, the welfare area's director for elderly and disability services. Sirkka Kauppinen, one of the representatives, emphasized their position. "They're taking away the last care facility from Kivijärvi. This is a major issue for us that ruins everything. We all agree this cannot be done," she stated.
The petition handover occurred on Monday as opposition continues growing. Elderly care accessibility remains a pressing concern across Finnish municipalities. Local governments face difficult choices between cost efficiency and maintaining community services.
This situation highlights the tension between regional consolidation and local service needs. Small communities often bear the brunt of service centralization efforts.
What does this mean for Kivijärvi's elderly residents? They may face longer journeys to access care facilities in other towns. The closure could particularly impact those with limited mobility or without personal transportation.
