Lahti city planners propose converting a key intersection into a traffic circle. The Sammonlahti market area would lose its traffic lights under the new plan. A four-story apartment building would also join the neighborhood.
The changes appear in draft zoning documents published online. Skinnarilankatu street would get a new name—Yliopistonkatu. Recent traffic lights installed along the street would disappear.
The new residential building would stand beside existing kebab-pizzerias and apartments. Helsinki Road may also receive traffic circles in separate planning processes.
This redesign aims to improve traffic flow in the growing Sammonlahti district. The shift from signals to roundabouts reflects common Nordic urban planning approaches that prioritize safety and continuous movement.
City officials must still approve the draft plan before construction begins. Local residents can review the proposal and provide feedback through official channels.
