A sprawling drug trafficking investigation in Sweden's Värmland region has reached a critical point. Authorities have now detained ten individuals, with two more facing charges in absentia this week. The case centers on a network allegedly operating between Sweden and Turkey, with roots stretching back nearly two decades.
One of those charged in absentia is Denho Acar, 51. He is identified as the founder of the Original Gangsters network in Gothenburg. Prosecutors allege his involvement in serious drug offenses in Värmland from August through April. He also faces accusations related to inciting crimes involving flammable and explosive materials, as well as preparing for serious public destruction in Västra Götaland County in February.
Acar, previously convicted for several serious crimes, has publicly discussed his criminal past in a Swedish television documentary. He is believed to be residing in Turkey, where he fled in 2006. He denies all current charges. His lawyer could not be reached for immediate comment.
The second individual charged in absentia is a 33-year-old man from Kristinehamn. He is suspected of serious drug offenses in both Turkey and Sweden, along with a serious weapons crime in his hometown.
In total, more than twenty people are suspected in the case. Ten are currently in custody. Seven hail from the Kristinehamn area, two from Karlstad, and one from Lilla Edet. The prosecutor, Sofie Derke, stated that charges are planned for January. She noted the challenge of extraditing those abroad, saying they may have to be tried later if they cannot be brought to Sweden by then.
This case highlights ongoing challenges in Swedish society related to organized crime and international drug networks. It reflects a broader national trend where local criminal groups often maintain international connections, complicating law enforcement efforts.
